The mental load – also known as emotional labour or invisible work – is the continuous cycle of thinking, planning and organising domestic life. It exists separately to the daily grind of housework and often goes unnoticed.
Balance the Load is a collaborative project that aims to bring balance to uneven mental workloads in interpersonal relationships. We are developing a toolkit that will allow people to expose the value that their invisible work brings and fairly distribute ownership of tasks in their relationships.
