What is mental load?

The mental load – also known as emotional labour or invisible work – is the continuous cycle of thinking, planning and organising domestic life. Put simply, it is domestic project management

Do you feel like you are a running list of everything that is happening and needs to happen for the household to run smoothly? Or maybe your partner is burning out and you’d like to pitch in more but don’t know where to start?

The mental load – also known as emotional labour or invisible work – is the continuous cycle of thinking, planning and organising domestic life. It exists separately to the daily grind of housework and often goes unnoticed.

Balance the Load is a collaborative project that aims to bring balance to uneven mental workloads in interpersonal relationships. We are developing a toolkit that will allow people to expose the value that their invisible work brings and fairly distribute ownership of tasks in their relationships. If you have thoughts, experiences or feedback you'd like to share, please get in touch using the contact form below.
